7 habits for a car that always smells fresh
A freshener works best in a clean car. These seven simple habits stop bad smells before they start.

A nice scent can't cover up a car that smells of old food and damp mats for long. The good news: keeping a car fresh takes very little time if you make it a habit.
1. Empty it every time you fill up
Use the time at the petrol station to throw away receipts, bottles and wrappers. Small rubbish adds up fast.
2. Shake out the floor mats
Once a week, take the mats out and shake them. In winter, let wet mats dry completely, because damp mats are a main cause of musty smells.
3. Vacuum the seats and corners
Crumbs hide between the seats and under them. A quick vacuum every couple of weeks keeps them from going stale.
4. Air the car out
Open all windows for a few minutes after the car has been parked in the sun. Fresh air does more than any product.
5. Look after the air conditioning
Old cabin filters can smell musty. Check in your car's manual how often the cabin filter should be changed, and have it done at your next service.
6. Keep pets and sports kit separate
Use a blanket or a box for dogs, muddy shoes and gym bags, and wash it regularly.
7. Add a scent you love
Once the car is clean, a freshener is the finishing touch. Hang it from the mirror, pull it out of the bag only a little, and let it do its work.
